Quite an emotional read and it pushes buttons all over the place: the people, the culture, good and evil, tension between conscience and the will to survive, the effects of tradition and life experience, breaking out of molds.  I likely missed many other important parts in this list, but so many elements you captured well and made me feel and experience them. Clearly, you as an author know your subject matter well, from the PCT to the culture of fringe groups and plain people, to militia and its practices. You use metaphor effectively leaving the reader with a soul-searching omniscience that bares the reader’s soul. Humor. Whimsy. Fantasy. Romance. It’s all there. 

I found the tension between authentic faith and hypocrisy incisive. Giving vs greed. Risk vs security.  Faith in God vs confidence in self. 

I found the story deeply personal because I know you, and I have lived so much of what you wrote. The story on one hand seems extreme, even a fantasy adventure, on the other hand, is it not pretty much true?
